Meet Salty Sisters
Founded in 1951, the Salty Sisters are believed to be the first organized women’s sailing group in the United States. What began with ten women eager to learn and race sailboats has grown into a vibrant community of more than 100 members who share a passion for sailing, learning, competition, and friendship.
The Salty Sisters meet nearly every Wednesday morning for sailing at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center on Demens Landing, followed by lunch at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Members sail a wide variety of boats, including Optimist Dinghies, Ideal 18s, Sonars, 420s, J70s, and Sunfish. While competitive racing remains a significant part of the organization, the season also includes lighthearted events such as the annual Candy Cane Regatta, Mother Ducky Regatta and other fun races enjoyed by sailors of all skill levels.
In addition to weekly club racing, the Salty Sisters compete in interclub regattas through the Florida Women's Sailing Association (FWSA), as two of Florida’s premier women’s sailing events.
Continuing education has always been central to the Salty Sisters tradition. Members participate in instructional programs both on and off the water, covering topics such as racing rules, tactics, sail trim, starting strategy, nautical signal flags, and race management. Whether a member is new to sailing or an experienced racer, there are always opportunities to learn and grow.
Beyond sailing, the Salty Sisters enjoy an active social and volunteer tradition. Members participate in club gatherings, holiday celebrations, cruises, educational outings, and community activities throughout the year. The organization also proudly supports many sailing and charitable initiatives, including junior sailing programs, race committee service for SPYC regattas, and programs supporting disabled sailors.
Today, the Salty Sisters continue their longstanding mission: to promote sailing, develop seamanship and racing skills, encourage sportsmanship, and foster lasting friendships among women who love being on the water.
